Famed geek director Kevin Smith is becoming quite the Arrowverse regular, as he returns to direct a second Supergirl episode – his fourth for the universe as a whole. Smith has previously directed two episodes of The Flash, ‘The Runaway Dinosaur’ in season 2 and ‘Killer Frost’ in season 3, as well as an earlier Supergirl season 2 episode, ‘Supergirl Lives’. Smith’s directorial return is no surprise – his previous episodes have been well-received, and as a vocal comic book nerd, Smith is the perfect person to work on the DC TV universe.
He’s not the only one returning for his upcoming episode, however. This week has seen Smith posting a few images from his episode to social media, including a shot of him with a familiar face for DC fans…
Smith added two Supergirl-related images to Instagram this week. The first shows Smith standing with Lynda Carter, as she jokingly sticks her tongue out at him. The caption reads: “You’re a wonder, Wonder Woman! Had a @dccomics dream day working with the First Lady of TV Superheroes. … She’s still fighting for our rights, but what you can’t see is that I’M the one wearing the satin tights.” A later image shows Smith standing on set, with a grate below him lit up in blue, and surrounded by flat panels displaying geometric shapes that look like potential building plans. This is captioned: “Daxamite technology! Spending Friday night in space shooting @supergirlcw! Dax tech created by the amazing #tylerharron. That is a clear glass TV by Planar. Looks high tech but you can watch movies on it like a regular TV. Not a commercial, I’m just impressed!” Take a look at the images:

Carter previously appeared on Supergirl as President Olivia Marsdin on ‘Welcome To Earth’. Carter’s appearance in the episode was a huge fan-pleaser, and even included a reference to Carter’s most famous role on a superhero TV show: as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince on the iconic ’70s Wonder Woman series. In the episode, Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) complimented the President on her private plane… to which she replied that Supergirl should see her other jet – a reference to Wonder Woman’s invisible plane!
We’re thrilled to see Carter return to the series as President Marsdin, especially with Smith behind the wheel on this episode. We don’t know yet exactly what this episode will be about, but it is set to air in late March, and will presumably be involving both the President and a little of Mon-El’s (Chris Wood) backstory or involvement (based on the inclusion of Daxamite tech in the second image). We may even discover whether Marsdin’s reference to the jet was just an easter egg for comic book fans, or if she might actually be Wonder Woman in this universe!
It’s unlikely that Carter would be reprising her iconic role as Wonder Woman, though. It is far more likely that the jet, like so many Easter Eggs within this universe, was simply a throwaway comment for the fans. Many fans may also be concerned that the return of Carter’s character may make for a very political episode, which not everyone would enjoy. Arrow recently aired an episode dealing with the controversial subject of gun violence, and Powerless has certainly not been afraid to include a few political jabs. However Carter returns, though, we are just looking forward to seeing Wonder Woman and Supergirl side by side once more.
