Much of the conversation about the upcoming return of Supergirl has revolved around Mon-El (Chris Wood). No surprise there either, as the Daxamite is keeping some pretty big secrets from his new friends. Nevertheless, the show is an ensemble and each of its characters have a story to tell. In fact, absent from a lot of the conversation about the latter half of Supergirl‘s second season so far has been Hank Henshaw, aka J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter.
J’onn’s story so far on Supergirl has been pretty dramatic. The Green Martian warrior initially disguised himself as human Hank Henshaw, the head of the DEO, before he revealed his true identity to Alex and Kara Danvers. More recently, J’onn discovered what he was led to believe was another surviving Green Martian, M’gann M’orzz, alias Megan Morse. J’onn was thrilled, until he learned she was actually not a Green Martian like him, but a member of the White Martian race that committed genocide against the Green Martians and were responsible for the death of his family. Through a series of events, J’onn then found himself being turned into a White Martian, due to a transfusion he received from M’gann, but he was cured in the Supergirl season 2 midseason finale. The question is, what happens now?
Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg offered the following tease to EW, with regard to what comes next for Miss Martian and Martian Manhunter on the show:
‘His relationship with M’gann is an important one over this next batch of episodes. There is some really great stuff for David (Harewood) and Sharon (Leal) that we are really excited about. We love Sharon’s performance and we love seeing David and Sharon together, it’s some of our favorite stuff this season. We’ve been really lucky with our romantic pairings this season and we really think that J’onn and M’gann have a great storyline coming up.’
M’gann swore that she had tried to save some of the Green Martians from her people and just wants to live a normal life on Earth, when she was first confronted by J’onn about her true identity on Supergirl. J’onn has so far responded by incarcerating her, but as the only two survivors of their planet, there has to be more to their story then that. While Kreisberg’s comments don’t offer many clues as to what comes next for the pair, at least they confirm that the characters’ plot thread is going somewhere.
So far, J’onn has not had any romantic storylines on the show, while all the rest of the main characters have to some degree or another. (Even Cat Grant flirted quite a bit with Maxwell Lord.) It would be nice to see him happy, after so much sorrow. Of course, a relationship between a Green Martian and a White Martian would be complicated, to say the least, so whether or not the pair are destined for a happy ending, remains to be seen.
