New Riverdale Trailer: Dark Secrets in Archie’s Hometown

The CW currently features a number of comic book adaptations among its primetime lineup, most notably the network’s four series based on DC Comics superheroes — though iZombie, based on Vertigo’s comic series of the same name, will debut its third season in January. However, The CW will add another comic-inspired show to its lineup next month with the official premiere of Riverdale. Based on Archie Comics’ iconic characters and setting, the series will feature a darker, more modern take on Archie Andrews and his fellow Riverdale residents.
Developed by Archie Comics’ chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and executive produced by The CW’s DC TV architect Greg Berlanti, Riverdale was ordered to series by the network this past spring for a midseason debut. Although the pilot for Riverdale screened at Comic-Con International in San Diego this summer, the first promo didn’t arrive until last month. Now, a new trailer for Riverdale offers more insight into The CW’s Archie Comics-based series.
The CW released the Riverdale “Deeper” trailer [above] featuring the tagline, “The deeper you go, the darker the secrets.” The short promo teases the murder of a local teenager — Jason Blossom, twin brother of Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) — as well as Archie Andrews’ (K.J. Apa) relationship with his music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Furthermore, a voiceover by Archie previews the character’s difficult relationship with his hometown in the series: “I’m doubting everything about myself, about Riverdale…”

The new trailer for Riverdale additionally features Archie’s best friend Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) as well as Archie’s comic book love interests, Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) — both of whom were featured in a recently released promo for The CW series. In terms of the show’s main cast, Riverdale also includes Archie’s father Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), Veronica’s mother Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols), and fellow classmates Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), Reggie Mantle (Ross Butler), and Kevin Keller (Casey Cott).
While this new promo for Riverdale focuses more on teasing the story and character arcs that season 1 will explore, it does still incorporate the eerie tone that was featured in the first trailer. The series has been compared to David Lynch’s cult-favorite murder-mystery Twin Peaks, and Riverdale certainly invokes a similar tone with the imagery in the series’ latest trailer. It’s additionally clear Riverdale will include plenty of character drama over the course of its first season. But, whether Riverdale lands with audiences — both fans of Archie Comics and casual TV viewers — remains to be seen when the series premieres next month.
