Twin Peaks Promo Confirms the Return of Composer Angelo Badalamenti

For fans of Twin Peaks, the wait for the much anticipated season three is a long one, but one that will hopefully pay off when the season drops on Showtime in 2017. When exactly it will air remains to be seen; the channel are hesitant to confirm anything past the fact that creators David Lynch and Mark Frost have written 12 plus episodes of varying length, and Lynch has directed all of them. Aside from cast lists, everything else surrounding Twin Peaks‘ return has also been kept tightly under wraps, too, but now there’s a glimmer of light.Posting on his Twitter, Lynch confirmed what many had long suspected; original Twin Peaks composer, Angelo Badalamenti has returned to write the score for the third season, which will pick up with events in the small town twenty five years after the mystery of who killed Laura Palmer brought the community to its knees. Badalameni has a long and detailed working relationship with Lynch, including composing the scores for Mullholland Drive and The Straight Story as well as both seasons of Twin Peaks and the film, Fire Walk With Me. Badalamenti won a Grammy for the Twin Peaks Soundtrack, which went gold in 25 countries. The video posted by Lynch features Badalamenti playing the hauntingly familiar ‘Laura’s Theme’ while a camera slowly zooms in on her yearbook photo. It can be viewed, above. From the very first rumors of its return, Twin Peaks has been looked forward to by many, not least the original cast themselves, with many of them eagerly returning to their roles and rallying together to convince Lynch to stay when he momentarily departed the project last year. Kyle MacLachlan will reprise his role of Special Agent Dale Cooper and also returning are Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer), Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne), Mädchen Amick (Shelly Johnson) and Ray Wise (Leland Palmer) Michael Horse (Deputy Hawk), Dana Ashbrook (Bobby Briggs), Miguel Ferrer (Albert Rosenfeld), Peggy Lipton (Norma Jennings), Everett McGill (Ed Hurley). Catherine E. Coulson (Log Lady) is also listed, having recorded scenes before her death.

Adding to the already impressive cast list is a whole host of newcomers, too. Amanda Seyfried, Naomi Watts, Balthazar Getty, Tim Roth, Michael Cera, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Ashley Judd are all on the roster, though the nature of their roles is not yet known. In fact, no plot details are known at all, which is Lynch’s way, but there’s certainly a lot of questions that need answering. An accompanying book, written by Frost, is also set to be released, detailing exactly what happened in the twenty five years since we last visited the town. The synopsis for that is certainly intriguing:“Twenty-five years [after Dale Cooper’s investigation of the murder of Laura Palmer], the FBI gets a hold of a box it won’t divulge the provenance of. In the box, a huge dossier. A female FBI agent is tasked to analyse all the documents inside, and everything related to the strange town of Twin Peaks. She also has to determine the identity of the person who compiled the dossier. Along the way, she discovers secrets about the lives of the town’s residents, but also investigative reports from Dale Cooper who has since vanished, newspaper clippings, an autopsy report, and other classified information. What happened since the death of the young woman? And why did an anonymous ‘archivist’ compile such a thorough dossier on Twin Peaks and its origins.”Might it have any bearing on the third season of Twin Peaks? Very possibly, but given the way Lynch’s mind works, who knows for sure? At the recent TCA Press Tour, showtime boss David Nevins simply tried to prepare us for the unexpected:“Everything about Twin Peaks is going to be unconventional in the handling of it and how we put it out in the world and how we market. I want to embrace the unusualness of it, and I think it is quite possible we’re not going to do a traditional release pattern. I don’t know exactly what that means yet. I’ve had a couple of conversations with [Lynch]. I can definitely see longer episodes or the question of how we release it linearly and for those who want to stream it.”Whatever the outcome, however or whenever the show is released or wherever the plot may take us, it’ll still be damn fine to return to Twin Peaks once more.Twin Peaks will air on Showtime in 2017.
