The Mummy Stars Pose for Cast Photo; Production Moves to Africa

Next year Universal launches the premiere installment of its shared monster universe, The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella. The reboot version of the classic monster tale will be set in modern times, focus on a female mummy, and also features an appearance by another well-known horror character — Dr. Jekyll (Russell Crowe).Cruise plays a Navy SEAL who is confronted with an ancient monster he can’t begin to understand, with Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders) as the helpful archaeologist. Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People v. OJ Simpson) and Jake Johnson (New Girl) play military men alongside Cruise’s character.Filming began this spring in Oxford, England, and early set photos have included peeks at Cruise, Wallis, and Boutella in action. The latest videos from the shoot revealed a large-scale action sequence featuring the havoc wrought by The Mummy. There’s no rest for the cast, however, as Wallis has tweeted a photo of herself, Cruise, Johnson, and Vance at the new location shoot in Namibia, a country in southwest Africa.#THEMUMMY in Africa. #Namibia, we are so excited to be here! @UniversalPics #TomCruise #JakeJohnson #CourtneyVance pic.twitter.com/AycmAyIuPI— Annabelle Wallis (@WallisAnnabelle) July 29, 2016The official synopsis described the action spanning locations “from the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London.” It looks like the latest filming will take place in the sweeping sands of the Namib desert, and the production has gathered together hundreds of crewmembers in the coastal town of Swakopmund. The cast looks ready to go in their khaki desert gear, with Vance sporting some standard military camouflage. This won’t be the first time Namibia has hosted a film crew; portions of Mad Max: Fury Road were also shot in their desert. It’s clear from the resulting movie that The Mummy will have plenty of room to build any sets and film action sequences, or perhaps even strand the characters in a vast, open wasteland. Screen Rant will keep you posted on any new set photos or video that may give us further clues on the plot of the upcoming film.
